Group Work... Works Wonders
This training will cover the basic elements of group therapy to using creative techniques for the more advanced facilitator. You will learn about the different types of groups and their purposes, the five stages and their characteristics, as well as skills needed for an effective facilitator. We will cover why groups work and the curative factors that have been identified by Irvin Yalom. More importantly you will learn concrete examples of facilitating techniques such as measuring progress through scaling, role playing, psychodrama as well as others. By the end of the training you will have the knowledge to recognize the stage a group is in, know what curative factors are possible, identify the facilitating skill needed and apply the techniques that can be used to obtain the best possible therapeutic outcome.
J. Kevin Turnipseed MA, LPC has a diverse clinical background that includes working in a group practice, a residential treatment center for youth, a substance abuse and psychiatric hospital, non-profit organizations, and managed care for behavioral health. The majority of his clinical experience has been serving at-risk adolescents, youth who have been traumatized, and their caregivers. Kevin has counseled both individuals and families, and has facilitated a variety of groups. He has trained others for teen suicide assessment/prevention, and facilitating multi-family groups. Kevin is a former member of the Arlington ISD teen suicide prevention task force. Kevin has held a variety of non-profit management positions including Program Director, Director of Counseling, Clinical Inpatient Manager and Executive Director for a non-profit organization. He holds a BA in Psychology from UT Arlington and an MA in Counseling from Amber University. He began his in the mental health field in 1993 and received his license in 1997. From 1997 to 2006 he provided private services on a part-time basis and in 2004, he opened his office in Mansfield.
